What are some pretty continual flowering shrubs?

garden shrubs

My husband is building me a garden bed in my backyard. I want some nice shrubs that flower at different times of the year to fill it, so then it can always have flowers at some spot or the other - any suggestions?

I like roses, hydrangeas & peonies.
Added poppy, mums (fall bloom), hollyhock & moon flower.
Reseed annual marigold (especially near lettuce) plus dark purple and bright pink petunias.

Order Hyberger or Gurney catalogs from websites.
Or go to local ‘do it yourself’ shops for a book on Perennials.
This way you know colors available, when & how long bloom and if can be planted in your Zone.

I have used my Perennial book for many years and created several creative areas around my house because of the book and my yard thoroughly drafted on graph paper that I keep with the book (plus one tag of each kind of planting and mark it onto my graphed paper).

There are many flowering shrubs that would add beauty to your new garden. Fall is also a good time to plant bare-root shrubs, but container-grown shrubs may be planted any time of the year, except when the ground is frozen.

Hydrangea are a popular shrub, and are available in many bright colors. The Golden Chain Tree, which flowers in the spring, is a unique and beautiful shrub, as is the Japanese Red Quince, that flowers and produces fruit in the fall. The Hardy Crape Myrtle is another colorful shrub that flowers in midsummer.

You can find these shrubs and a wide selection of other beautiful flowering shrubs here:

There are too many to mention and it all depend on your soil type and the amount of sunlight your garden receives.

The best thing to do is every 6 weeks go to your local garden centre to see what is in flower. Choose something that you like then discuss your choice with a knowledgeable member of staff to ensure that it is suitable for the conditions your garden has. Most importantly check how big it will grow.

Azeleas, Rhododendons & Forsythia in spring.
Dwarf Red Hardy Azalea is the hardiest of evergreen Azaleas. It brings life to shady spots year-round, with vivid, rose-crimson flowers for weeks in early spring and bright red foliage all winter. It grows 2-3′ high with similar spread:

Variegated Weigela. Pink flowers from late spring into fall, oval leaves are variegated foliage, green edged with creamy white. It grows a compact 4-6′ high with a 5′ spread & is hardy.
“My Monet Variegated Weigela” is just 12 to 18 inches high and wide, blushed with pink in leaf and bloom. The new spring foliage is bright pink, maturing to green edged in white, and the abundant rosy purple-pink blossoms are far larger and more abundant than on other varieties.=-1&mainPage=LGprodview&ItemId=41709&PrevMainPage=advsearchresults&scChannel=sitemap&SearchText=p16.v227;l1.v272&OfferCode=TH3

Lilacs bloom late spring. Josee lilac will continues to flower intermittently til frost. Just 4-6′ tall.

Peony Sorbert has pink & white blooms in early summer, & its foliage turns red in autumn.

Rose of Sharon, Butterfly Bush, & Hydrangeas bloom in summer

    Fall colors & winter color:
Arrowwood viburnum arrowwood viburnum bears white flowers in spring. In autumn, arrowwood viburnum shrubs display attractive fall foliage & bluish berries in clusters. They reach a height of 6′-15′, with a similar spread.

Fothergilla (Fothergilla major) has fragrant white flowers in spring. In fall the dark green foliage changes to colors of yellow, orange and scarlet.
    (6-8′) Golden yellow-orange (Dwarf 3-4′) red-orange

‘Tor’ spirea (Spiraea betulifolia ‘Tor’) reaches a height of 2-3′ and spreads out 2-3′. It requires full sun. The shrub’s foliage is dark green in summer, but its fall color is red. In May the plant bears small, white flowers in clusters.

Blackhaw viburnum (Viburnum prunifolium) The shrub yields white flowers in May, which become an edible fruit at harvest time. Fall color is offered not only by these bluish-black berries but also by colorful leaves. Dark green foliage morphs to purple to reddish-bronze to a crimson in fall. It achieves a height of 12-15′ and a spread 8-12′.

    Burning Bush (Euonymus alatus)
‘Rudy Haag’ achieves a height of 3-5′and a spread 3-5′.

Mahonia (Oregon hollygrape) has Holly-like leaves, brilliant yellow flower trusses, blue-black fruit, and bronzy winter color place Mahonia in the limelight each season. Be careful, this native evergreen spreads (in moist soil) to form broad colonies.
This Better Homes & Garden site gives pictures & descriptions of more flowering shrubs:

Compact American cranberrybush viburnum (Viburnum trilobum ‘Compactum’) yields masses of red berries that serve as a source of food for birds on the winter landscape. A rounded shrub, it bears white flowers in May and June that are followed by red fruit. As a bonus, the shrub offers foliage ranging from red to purple in fall. American cranberrybush viburnum is hardy to zone 2. It grows 4′-5′ high, with a spread of 3′-4′.

Blueberry has fall red leaf color besides blooming earlier in the season. It’s my favorite because it also bears fruit.

Good luck! Hope this is helpful.
