Suggestions for low maintance plants, ground cover, shrubs for shady Zone 5a moraine area?

I am not a gardener but I do appreciate a nice-looking garden. I have a very busy schedule which necessitates the need for low maintenance. Can you suggest a variety of plants, ground cover and shrubs for Zone 5a? I live on a moraine and most of my area is in a shady northern exposure. Ideally I’d also like to mix in a few plants that will keep away mosquitoes and other biting insects. Thanks in advance.

What plants are best for a balcony garden?

I live in on the 3rd floor of my apartment building and have a balcony. I wanted to start a small garden with some potted plants but I am not sure what would really work well. There is a big tree that is in front of my balcony so it only gets partial sun in the morning and then is in the shade most of the time.

Can not planting perennials in ground deep enough cause them not to sprout correctly or premature in some way?

My sister planted some flowers in my flowerbed, which she said were perennials. They recently sprouted out of ground about an inch or so, and are red in body and cone shaped. Is this a sign of not being planted deep enough, or premature sprouting of some sort? And if so, would covering with more dirt help even though they’ve already sprouted? Any insight on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
How to keep possums out of the garden?

Some time in the night a possum visits my back garden in Sydney (so not a big garden), knocks over most of the plant pots and eats all the herbs we’ve got planted. Anything we can do to deter it?
I should add that I don’t really want to deter cats… got lots of cats in our neighbourhood and I love them visiting
